Past Simple




The Past Simple is used to describe finished events at a definite time in the past.

Yesterday I watched a great movie on TV. It started at 8pm and finished at 10pm.

Past Simple: Regular Verbs
·         add –ED
Exception: consonant – y à drop –y and add –ied
                  study à studied

Past Simple: Irregular Verbs
·         Irregular verbs do not have –ed endings for the past simple. Each verb has its own form.
Go à went
Eat à ate
Have à had

Negative: DID NOT (didn’t) + verb
She didn’t go to school last week.

Interrogative: DID I/you/he/she/it/we/they …?
Did they play football yesterday?

Short answers:
·         Yes, I/you/he/she/it/we/they did.
·         No, I/you/he/she/it/we/they didn’t.

Past Simple: Verb be
I/he/she/it WAS (not) a doctor/at home/happy.
You/we/they WERE (not) a teacher/bored/young.

ALADDIN
Once there __________ (live) a poor widow and her son, Aladdin. One day, Aladdin’s uncle, Mustafa, __________ (come) to visit them.
